Description: This is a sweet platter, with an old-style message, perfect for hanging in your kitchen or dining room, or serving anything from a nice round bread to mounds of mashed potatoes to lots of fresh fruit. The bowl/plate is a good inch deep with gently rising sides. There's no manufacturing markings on the dish, but I believe others who attribute it to McKee & Brothers. Here's why: this belonged to my late sister, a serious collector of dishes and plates and such, especially in and around our hometown of Pittsburgh, PA, where she lived all her life. The McKee brothers (Samuel, James, and Thomas) were all about Pittsburgh, starting in 1834 with everything from window glass to fruit jars and lightning rod insulators. Offspring would create other "McKee"-named companies that produced cut glass, vials, bottles, and other types of glassware from the Civil War on. The company finally became “McKee & Brothers” in 1867. They became one of a handful of firms that perfected early pressed glass tableware patterns and novelties (EAPG: Early American Pressed Glass) up until the 1890s.McKee & Brothers moved a few miles outside of Pittsburgh to Jeannette, PA in 1888, where several other famous glass companies had also settled. About 1904, it became known as “McKee-Jeannette Glass Company”, then “McKee Glass Company”, under which name it began producing jadite (opaque green) , white milk glass, black glass and other opaque ware.It wasn't finished; in the first half of the 20th century, it competed with Pyrex with its own special cooking glass, and apparently entered the auto headlight arena as well.A series of buy-outs starting in 1951 finally ended with total closure in 1983.More than you wanted to know, no doubt, but when you buy an antique, you're always buying a piece of history! Thanks for your patience!Rick
