Description: For sale is a wonderful full-page illustration from the December 26, 1885, issue of The Spirit of the Times newspaper. It shows the legendary thoroughbred racehorse Freeland winning “the great sweepstakes” over Miss Woodford, Modesty, Bersan, Richmond and Monogram. It is signed by noted racing artist Henry Stull. The particular race featured in this artwork is not identified, but it is known that Freeland defeated Miss Woodford twice in August 1885 and once in September. At times, Freeland was ridden by Isaac Murphy, the Hall of Fame black jockey who is regarded as one of the greatest riders in American thoroughbred history. So Murphy might be aboard Freeland in this piece. This extremely rare page measures 10 by 15 1/2 inches is in very good condition. See my listings for other items. I gladly combine shipping fees for multiple purchases when they can be packaged together, and I do ship internationally. Please contact me with any questions, and thanks for looking!
