Young & Co. 1893 First Edition With a slip that reads "With the kind regards of The Author. Previous owner's inscription by William Paret (1826-1911) and Maryland Diocesan Library bookplate. William Paret (September 23, 1826 – January 18, 1911) was a significant figure in the Episcopal Church, serving as the Bishop of Maryland from 1885 until his death in 1911. Born in New York City, Paret attended Hobart College and was ordained as a priest in 1853. His tenure as Bishop of Maryland was marked by a strong commitment to addressing the spiritual and social needs of African Americans in his diocese during a time of pervasive racial segregation and prejudice. Paret initiated several programs to support Black congregations, advocated for the education of African American clergy, and worked to ensure that the Episcopal Church ministered effectively to African American communities. His efforts included the establishment of the Bishop's Penny Fund to support "Colored work in the diocese" and his involvement in the national church commission on church work among African Americans. Despite the paternalistic attitudes of his era, Paret's dedication to inclusivity and his progressive actions made him an important figure in African American history within the Episcopal Church. 12mo, 209 pages, publisher's original gilt lettered and decorated purple cloth covered boards.
