Description: Title: Rabbit Shooting Date of Printing: 1895 Printing Technique: chromolithography – an antique method of printing in which each individual color is applied separately to the paper using a series of hand-prepared stones and oil-based inks Artist: Arthur Burdett Frost (January 17, 1851 – June 22, 1928), usually cited as A. B. Frost, was a very successful American illustrator, graphic artist, painter and comics writer. Born in Philadelphia, the eldest of ten children, he was mostly self-taught but did study under Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, with Gilbert Tucker Margeson in Massachusetts and with William Merritt Chase at the Shinnecock Hills Summer School of Art. Frost incorporated his interest in hunting, shooting and golf into multiple illustrations and publications. Details: ORIGINAL chromolithograph from Shooting Pictures published by Charles Scribner’s Sons of New York, printed in chromolithography by Armstrong & Company of Boston. Shooting Pictures was a portfolio containing twelve chromolithographs. It was originally sold by subscription; each of the six parts included two prints and two text sheets. Also included were three pen and ink illustrations of shooting incidents, also executed by Frost. The original subscription was limited to 2,500 copies, making it exceedingly rare. Due to its size and cumbersomeness, most of the portfolios were broken up, the prints often being framed for display. The use of the lighter, French-style of chromolithography enabled the prints to capture the warmth and richness of the original watercolors. The Frost chromolithographs were issued tipped-in on thick backing boards. (“Tipped-in” means that the print was attached to the backing board along the upper edge of the print allowing the rest of the print to freely float above the backing board.) A.B. Frost’s printed signature (signed in original watercolor from which the prints were created in 1895) is in the lower right corner of the print (see photos).A reduced image of one of the folio covers is shown for informational purposes only. ORIGINAL FOLIO COVER IS NOT INCLUDED – we do not have the original accompanying text or the original folio cover. Size: 17 ½“ by 24” with original backing board, 13” by 20” actual printed image size Condition: Condition of print is EXCELLENT – no visible flaws, foxing, stains, tears, etc. Colors are clean and unfaded. Original backing board has some staining (see photos). Most staining is at the left edge and along the extreme upper edge. There is one spot below the lower left corner of the print. NONE of the staining comes anywhere near the print itself. All of the backing board stains could easily be matted out for framing.
