The department of Saône-et-Loire is a French department of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté whose prefecture is Mâcon. The department of Saône-et-Loire borders the departments of Côte-d'Or, jura , Ain, Rhône, Loire, Allier and Nièvre. The department was officially created on Mars 4, 1790 from part of the province of Burgundy, roughly within the limits of the former bailiwicks of Autun, Chalon, Charolles and Mâcon. The assembly of electors meeting on May 5, 1790 in Charolles chose to install the capital of the department in Chalon rather than in Mâcon, but the protests of this city led the Constituent Assembly to install the seat of the administration there, in February 1791. When it was created, the department was divided into seven districts5, the main towns of which were: Autun, Bourbon-Lancy, Chalon, Charolles, Louhans; Mâcon and Marcigny. Each of these districts is divided into cantons, and each canton into municipalities. The district of Autun includes fourteen cantons and eighty-seven municipalities, that of Bourbon-Lancy six cantons and twenty-eight municipalities, that of Chalon nineteen cantons and one hundred and sixty-three municipalities, that of Charolles, fourteen cantons and eighty-seven municipalities, that of Louhans twelve cantons and seventy-five municipalities, that of Mâcon nine cantons and center six municipalities, that of Marcigny nine cantons and forty-eight municipalities.
