(In 2003 6 framed plates sold at Christies auction house for over $2000.) A wonderful collection of 100 heliogravure prints of detailed drawings showing important architectural elements and designs from classical ruins in Greece and Italy. The drawings were done by dEspouy and some of his architecture students at the LEcole de Beaux Arts, in Paris. Beaux Arts training included the study of antiquity through meticulous drawings from artifacts and plaster casts. DEspouys collection brought together drawings of the Acropolis, Parthenon, Pompeii, Roman temples, the Pantheon, the Coliseum and other sites. These meticulous studies are still of interest to contemporary historians and designers, and have been reissued in a book published by Dover in 1999. Hector-Jean-Baptiste dEspouy (sometimes written Espouy, 1854-1929) was a French painter and architect, as well as a professor of ornamental design at the School of Beaux Arts in Paris from 1895. He exhibited landscapes and views of monuments at the Salon of 1880. In 1884, he won the Grand Prix de Rome, a scholarship for four years of study at Villa Medici, which he followed by several years of travel in Greece and Italy. He also edited other architectural books including a set on Medieval and Renaissance architecture. CONDITION: The covers have some soiling and light edgewear, staining on spine (probably from bleeding of adhesive). The spine label is chipped. The binding of this very heavy volume (about 20 lbs) is tight although there is some separation at the gutter between the half-title and title pages. The text and plates are complete, clean and intact with light and even age tonning, and with no tears or foxing. Check our other auctions and store listings for additional unusual items.
