Description: FERNAND KNOPFF (Belgian, 1858-1921) Major Symbolist/Art Nouveau painter with a hugely impressive list of achievements. Listed in all the art dictionaries of the period. His works, both as a painter and as a graphic artist like here, feature in countless Museum collections in Europe and further afield. "THE VIOLINIST". 1898 ORIGINAL AUTO-LITHOGRAPH from "THE STUDIO" (Volume 14,1898). [Delevoy et al. 323] *Believed to be a portrait of the Belgian female violinist Irma Sethe, who made her London concert debut in 1895 to wide critical acclaim. "With the exception of Lady Halle, the most remarkable lady vioinist who had ever appeared before the public in England, where her excellent technique, perfect intonation, warmth of feeling and musical insight were highly, almost extravagantly, praised". (from Henry Lahee, "Famous Violinists of Today and Yesterday" , London & Boston, 1916, no. 336.) Beautifully printed, a strong impression, on wove paper. (Note that Khnopff only made two auto-lithographs (signed in the stone) in his entire career - this is one of them.) Signed by the artist with his monogram in the stone bottom right corner. Bears the embossed blindstamp of "The Studio" at bottom right just below the signature. CONDITION: Excellent. A lovely image, no problems at all. I also have the original tissue-guard which is included in the sale just for further verification. REFERENCE: The Catalogue Raisonee is: Robert L. Delevoy et al., "Fernand Knopff. Catalogue de l'oeuvre"(1987). Item no. 323 - only state, and only edition; the print was not published anywhere else because it was a commission by "The Studio". "The Studio", was a showcase publication for the graphic art of both leading and aspiring artists, it featured some stellar names such as Whistler, Beardsley, Waterhouse, Vallotton, Pennell, Khnopff, etc etc. It took lithography to a whole new level, and artists were keen to submit their graphic work for inclusion. In the 1890s it became virtually the universally acclaimed in-house journal of the Art Nouveau, Arts & Crafts and Avant-Garde movements. Size of the main image measures 18 x 11 centimetres. The sheet in total measures 20 x 29 cms. ***MARKETWATCH *** My final 2 photos will give you an idea of how the upscale galleries price this lovely item. ***I am happy to combine shipping if there's more than one of my items that you like, and I only use fully tracked Royal Mail service both for UK and for overseas - for everybody's peace of mind.
