The Battle of the Hallue, also known as the Battle of Pont-Noyelles, took place on 23 and 24 December 1870, near the Hallue, a tributary of the right bank of the Somme, during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. Central fold.The Franco-German War of 1870–1871, sometimes called the Franco-Prussian War or the War of 1870, was a conflict that took place from 19 July 1870 to 28 January 1871 between France and a coalition of German states led by Prussia and including the twenty-one other member states of the North German Confederation, as well as the Kingdom of Bavaria, the Kingdom of Württemberg and the Grand Duchy of Baden. On July 19, 1870, the French Empire declared war on the Kingdom of Prussia. The French troops were nevertheless poorly prepared, less numerous (300,000 against 500,000, much more than expected in the general staff because Prussia succeeded in allying itself with Baden, Württemberg and Bavaria5) and lacked a concerted military strategy; the German troops had recent – and victorious – experience of fire (with the conflicts against Denmark in 1864 and Austria two years later), heavy artillery and excellent training.
