Description: THE WRECK OF THE FRANKLIN Written by Jules Verne and translated by A. Estoclet. Published by Street and Smith, New York and London. Copyright 1891 and 1903; this is the third US edition, a reprint edition of Verne’s story Mistress Branican first published in the US by Cassell Publishing Co. in 1891. The cover is a simplified version of the 1st US edition, but has used an unusual title variation. This is the earlier, 1903 publication and preceded a more common version first published in 1907 by Chatterton-Peck. It is sparsely illustrated—four illustration plates—the frontispiece and three in the second part. Mistress Branican (1891) is an adventure novel by Jules Verne. It involves a San Diego ship captain who sails away from his young wife and baby. His ship is wrecked in the waters northwest of Australia and he endures over a decade of being marooned on a desert island and then being captured and enslaved by Australian Aborigines. His wife overcomes a period of insanity and then embarks on the Herculean task of finding and rescuing her husband. DESCRIPTION: 377 pages 5 3/8 x 7 1/2 inches reprint edition hardcover with dustjacket CONDITION: This hard-cover book is in very good condition. There is no dust jacket. This book has been rebound and recased into its original cover. The tan cloth hardcover is soiled and the spine is darkened. There is cloth repair at the spine ends and corners. The textblock has been rebound into the cover using new cloth spine reinforcing instead of the original cheap mull. The original spine caps were reused. The original endpapers have been retained with similar paper repair at the hinges. There are some erased pencil marks on the front endpaper. The interior is excellent with no names, marks, underlining, tears or odor. The paper is slightly toned with age—this book usually shows acid browning of the paper and cannot be read without damage—this copy has good paper and can be read easily with only moderate care. The hinges and binding are excellent with no loose or missing pages. BECAUSE MEDIA RATE SHIPPING IS FREE ON THE BOOKS I SELL, COMBINE THIS WITH OTHER ITEMS FROM MY EBAY STORE.
