Designed tall and narrow to fit well into a child's Christmas stocking, it was written by John Jewett. This is the story of a little girl in Fableland who has help putting some of her misbehaving pets into line by a wizard bird named Con. This 1905 book is very much representative of the era, from the writing style to the amazing color illustrations by Edward Little and the black-and-white illustrations by Oliver Herford. This 123-page book has eight color illustrations and several small black-and-white drawings within the story. The cover of the book, with a charming Christmas design against a deep green color, would make a beautiful bit of vintage holiday decor. From the quaint illustration of Santa to the arts-and-crafts-movement style front, it is the perfect decoration for a mantle or holiday vignette. Condition is very good - the hardboard cover edges are chipped and worn with rubbing over the covers and tips. The front illustration is in nice condition - the back has some dark splotches that appear to be ink stains - the interior pages are age-tanned, but not to excess. There are a few small closed tears and dog ears at the edge of pages, but there are no inscriptions or markings. The book is remarkably free of spotting and foxing with light cover wear.
