He served in the state legislature of South Carolina and ENSLAVED nearly 1000 HUMAN BEINGS on the family plantation. During the CIVIL WAR he served as an officer in the Confederate South Carolina Militia leading HAMPTON'S LEGION. He served under JEB STUART at the BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG. Following the war, Hampton became a leading proponent of THE LOST CAUSE OF THE CONFEDERACY movement, and was elected GOVERNOR of SOUTH CAROLINA in 1876. He served as a UNITED STATES SENATOR from 1879 to 1891, and as the UNITED STATES RAILROAD COMMISSIONER under GROVER CLEVELAND from 1893 to 1897. He passed in COLUMBIA, SC, in 1902.
