Description: [BAHAI FAITH, ABDUL BAHA, JULIET THOMPSON, MANUSCRIPTS]THOMPSON, Juliet (Author) On offer here is an ORIGINAL, EARLY TRANSCRIPT OF 'BOOK I' OF JULIET THOMPSON'S DIARY SHE KEPT WHILE IN THE PRESENCE OF ABDUL BAHA IN 1909. The manuscript is in a period style brown notebook on lined paper. The work is in generally good condition with some minor chipping and brittleness at the corners, but no textual losses. There are 55 pp (27 double sided leaves + 1pp ) of written transcript. The Diary content dates run from July 2nd 1909 through July 11th 1909. It seems as if this transcription was completed July 19, 1909 ? The notebook was then sent to Juliet August 29, 1909 with the note you see on the inside cover by Moneer Zain. Moneer Zain writes in the forwarding note: "Miss Juliet Thompson -Akka, August 29, 1909Dear Sister:In compliance with your request I looked over the notes carefully and with pleasure. With loving greetings from all of us & to each of you we shall not forget you in the life giving Presence of Abdul Baha - Your brother - Moneer Zain" This early transcript is NOT in Juliet's hand, although we believe there are corrections (in another hand) which could be. This seems to be a transcription by another early follower of Bahai, Moneer Zain. Zain seems to have acquired an early copy of Juliet's diary and has read it for content integrity reasons and is then sending it back to Juliet for her comments or approval ?? We are not sure of the purpose for this, but the Archivist for the Bahai National archives concurs with this assessment. (we contacted them of course.) We will have more to say about this incredible manuscript, but wanted to get this out to the collecting public and the Bahai community ASAP so we are listing this now and will update with additional information as we receive it. It goes without saying, early Bahai items such as this are RARE in the market and this is no exception. We feel this item will find a proper owner among the general antiquarian theology collectors or perhaps in the Bahai study community. We are not in a financial position to donate this (the Bahai Archives already asked) but we are asking what we feel is a fair value for something of this importance. If any Bahai researchers have learned insights as to the history of this manuscript, please feel free to contact us. We have purchased the official published edition of Juliet's manuscript to compare it to what this is. The Bahai Archivist stated this transcript differs in content with ours but didn't specify exactly where / how it differs. We'd like to research this ourselves to determine this area of detail as it is quite interesting. Please see the other two Bahai items we have on offer we acquired with this manuscript. ______________Juliet Thompson (1873–1956) was an American artist, and disciple of Baháʼí Faith leader ʻAbdu'l-Bahá. She is perhaps best remembered for her book The Diary of Juliet Thompson though she also painted a life-sized portrait of ʻAbdu'l-Bahá.After learning of the Baháʼí Faith in Washington, D.C., near 1898 she traveled to Paris at the invitation of Laura Dreyfus-Barney's mother. Later in 1901 in Paris she met Thomas Breakwell, (see Baháʼí Faith in the United Kingdom), who gave her Arthur de Gobineau's description in French of the execution of the Báb which confirmed her faith. Paris is where Charles Mason Remey first met Thompson when she was taking classes on the religion from Mírzá Abu'l-Faḍl.Among many talks ʻAbdu'l-Bahá gave in the United States he gave one at her residence on 15 November 1912 at 48 West Tenth Street, New York. At this meeting he described distinctive qualities of the religion.During World War I she offered talks on the Baháʼí topic of The Most Great Peace. In the 1940s Thompson made several extended trips to Mexico to promulgate the religion. (See Baháʼí Faith in Mexico.)Thompson recalled Khalil Gibran, a neighbor and acquaintance of hers, and reports several anecdotes relating to Gibran: She recalls Gibran met ʻAbdu'l-Bahá a couple times circa 1911–1912Over her life she made two Baháʼí pilgrimages. Her first was in July, 1909 when she began her diary which was eventually published. Her work is a main source on ʻAbdu'l-Bahá's journeys to the West when he was in Europe in 1911 as well as some of his travels in the United States in 1912.Thompson's second pilgrimage was in 1926.Thompson died at her home in New Rochelle, NY on December 4, 1956.
