He was a lawyer and had been the mayor of Gastonia and had earned his Bachelor's degree in law from Trinity College, now Duke University. Brantley York (1805-1891) was the Methodist minister who founded the institution which would become Trinity College and Duke. Curiously, this volume was signed by the future Governor of N.C. who was born the same year that Rev.
