Description: Here we have a rarity. A circa 1910-1920 era chocolate bar wrapper for Cowan’s Royal Milk Chocolate. The front features a fantastic and colorful image of a Maple Leaf as well as a crown motif. The back has the words “The Cowan Co. Limited Toronto Canada” written on the back. This one came with a group of Cowans V15 Canadian Miltia Insignia Cards that I acquired many years ago. The backs of those cards all state “Each Package of Cowans Royal Milk Chocolate contains one of a series of 15 designs illustrating the insignia of the Canadian Militia. Save the Cards”. Those cards were known to have been issued sometime during WW1 1914-1918. As I mentioned earlier this wrapper was found with a smaller group of those cards so it is not a leap to assume this is a wrapper from that era as well. It also should be noted that the font used on the word “Cowans” matches that of the V15 cards. The wrapper measures 5 1/4inches by 2 ½ inches approximately. It does have an edge split and some smaller tears. I have scanned the wrapper and take some pictures showing the side split. For you to be able to judge condition for yourself. The word rare get used often, but I think it really does apply here. The V15 cards are scarce enough and kids would have probably collected those, but I imagine most of the wrappers would have been thrown out. Not to mention WW1 chocolate rationing would have probably had an affect on production numbers. I doubt many of these survived over the years.I will be trying to list several EARLY TRADE & TYPE CARDS over the next few days (spread across different categories), including one or two that are unrecorded in any guide, that were put given away with Tobacco, Cigarettes , Caramel, Candy, Gum, Chocolate, Bread Coffee Tea Cereal and other products, covering such diverse subjects as Native American Indians , Baseball , Football, Boy Scouts, Ice Hockey, Golf, Presidents of the United States, NCAA and IVY League Colleges and Universities, Dog Breeds, Circus themes and many more.
