No tear or repair but has brown aged spots all over.After the successful occupation of Tsingtau in China by Imperial Germany on 14 November 1897, two companies from the first and two companies from the II. Seebataillon were fused to form a third formation, the III. Seebataillon. This new battalion arrived at Tsingtau on 26 January 1898 to garrison the East Asian Station of the imperial navy. It was and remained the only all-German unit with permanent status in an overseas protectorate. During the 1st World War, Japan attacked Tsingtau. The defenders of Tsingtau consisted mainly of the III. Seebataillon and naval artillery batteries with reinforcements from the East Asian Marine detachment. The vastly superor Japanese force suffered heavy casualties but succeeded by means of bombardment from both land and sea in forcing the German garrison to surrender once their ammunition ran short in November 1914.
