Description: 1917 E135 Collins-McCarthy - #64 Tom Griffith, Cincinnati Reds - SGC 2 On the Player and Card - Thomas Herman Griffith (1889–1967) was an MLB right fielder who played for the Boston Braves (1913–1914), Cincinnati Reds (1915–1918), Brooklyn Robins (1919–1925), and Chicago Cubs (1925). Throughout his career, he consistently performed at the plate, never hitting below .250 (outside of an injury-shortened 1914), and recording over 100 hits in a season on eight occasions. Renowned for his speed and strong defensive skills, Griffith made valuable contributions both offensively and in the outfield. Over 1,401 career games, he posted a solid slash line of .280/.328/.382. SGC has only graded 9 total examples of this card, with only four receiving a higher grade than the SGC 2 offered here of Tom Griffith. On the Set - In 1936, the official Baseball Hall of Fame was established, but back in 1917, Collins-McCarthy attempted to create its own version with the release of the Collins-McCarthy baseball card set (E135). On the back of each card, the company included the line, “This is one of the 200 pictures comprising Baseball’s Hall of Fame.” The 1917 Collins-McCarthy candy cards are one of the few significant card sets from the mid-1910s. Produced by the Collins-McCarthy Candy Company of San Francisco, the cards are easily identified by the company’s logo and an advertisement on the back. This set consists of 200 cards, each measuring about 2” x 3-1/4”, featuring black-and-white images of contemporary players, many of whom would later be inducted into the official MLB Hall of Fame. The card fronts share a design with other sets like Boston Store, Weil Baking, and Standard Biscuit. They feature a posed player image with a dark pinstripe border, and the player’s name, team, and card number appear along the bottom. There are thought to be four different back variations: blank, Collins-McCarthy, Boston Store, and Standard Biscuit. Due to the thin paper stock used for printing, finding these cards in good condition is difficult. Collins-McCarthy was also known for their Zee Nut candy, and Zee Nut baseball cards for the Pacific Coast League.
