Description: 1925 Imperial “How it Happened” Tobacco Golf Cards (C31) - Hole #3, 5 strokes The 1925 “How it Happened” golf series is a unique, humorous series of cards following an unfortunate golfer’s plight during an 18-hole round of golf. Taking it one shot at a time, the cards illustrate each step of the golfer’s frustrating round of golf. Card fronts present color cartoon illustrations depicting different shots on every hole. The collector’s goal was to acquire cards for all 18 holes, totaling 72 strokes exactly. With this exact combination, the card collector was entitled to submit the 18 cards for 6 “Perils of Golf” pictures that were “well worth framing.” The cards, measuring around 2 7/8” by 1 7/8”, were issued in 1925 by Imperial Tobacco, a cigarette manufacturing company operating in Canada. Imperial Tobacco was created in 1908, buying the Canadian interests of the American Tobacco Company, the manufacturer of such famous tobacco cards as the T206 series. As the “How it Happened” cards were manufactured in Canada, they have a C-Card designation from the American Card Catalog, that is, C31. The set is meant to be humorous as the golfer did not have a good round. He is seen as a frustrated golfer trying to make a variety of difficult shots. While the cards do not depict actual golfers, the cards are rare and collectable.
