Cast in England by Gillette & Johnstone, who cast the bells of the Park Avenue Baptist Church in New York, a great 17-ton bell has just arrived in this country at New York - and will be transported to Philadelphia, where it will be placed atop the Wanamaker store, as a memorial from Rodman Wanamaker to the founder of the institution. It will be rung for the first time on New Years Eve, when its tones will ring out the old and ring in the new year, and will signalize the beginning of the sixty-sixth year of the Wanamaker institution. The bell is the largest single-voiced instrument in America. Its rim is nine feet nine inches. It weighs 36,800 pounds. It is of perfect tone, and all of its harmonics are in proportional relation, and it is believed that it is the first bell of such huge proportions which has ever been cast and tuned on the five tone harmonic principle. When hung in place the bell will be 400 feet above the street, and 100 feet above the roof of the Wanamaker Building in Philadelphia, and on clear days its tones will carry for thirty miles.
