Description: 1926 Sousse Tunisia KIRYAT CHANAH by Rabbi Hananania Haviv Azoulai HEBREW VG CONDITION, HARDCOVER, WITH PORTRAIT INSERTED rare ambitious and comprehensive work purporting to include all the sayings of the early sages found in the Talmud and midrashim that are closed and difficult to comprehend by R. Hananiah Habib Azulay. The title page describes it as part one but there is no evidence that a second part was ever printed. R. Azulay has collected six hundred and twenty sayings equal to Keter (crown of malkhus). There are unusually lengthy approbations from R. Moses Strog of Tunis and R. Mixchael ben Aaron ben Sayid, an introduction from R. Samuel Taub, and an apologia from R. Azulay. The text is comprised of ninety-six ma’amarim of various length, some extensive and quite detailed. Hebrew books from Sousse are few and rare. Sousse (Ar. Susa) is port city on the central Tunisian coast, located 140 kilometers (87 miles) south of Tunis and 50 kilometers (31 miles) east of Qayrawan. One of Tunisia’s most ancient cities—founded by the Phoenicians as Hadrumentum in the eleventh century B.C.E.—Sousse has long been a port of strategic importance. There is evidence in the Cairo Geniza documents of a Jewish community in Sousse in the tenth and eleventh centuries, although the record is limited. There was a a two- to four-page weekly newspaper that appeared in Sousse, Tunisia, from June 23, 1920 to August 1, 1961, Al-Nijma (L’Étoile), subtitled “Weekly Organ of Israelite Information,” al-Nijma provided regional information in Judeo-Arabic and French. The journal was managed and edited by Maklouf Nadjar (Makhluf Najjar), businessman and owner of the Sahel (or Najar) printing house in Sousse and of La Dépêche Soussienne (May 1, 1944 to July 19, 1960).
