Description: DESCRIPTION 1936 (1984) Hong Kong Fantasy Crown King Edward VIII KM X7a Copper-nickel 4GFL Up for sale is a fantasy issue coin struck in 1984 by Richard Lobel which was part of a series of 1936-dated fantasy medals featuring the portrait of King Edward VIII. There are a few coins which were produced during the short reign of King Edward VIII, mostly colonial issues which bear his title, but no official coins were struck which carry his effigy. Lobel created a series of fantasy coins which show what coins of the British Empire might have looked like had King Edward VIII reigned long enough for designs to be approved and coins to be struck. This coin is an example of how coin of King Edward VIII for Hong Kong might have appeared. The obverse carries a portrait of King Edward VIII in left profile. His title is written in English as EDWARD•VIII•King•&•EMPEROR. The reverse displays a stylized image of a Chinese junk which is a frequent sight in Hong Kong harbor. The name Hong Kong is written in English and in Chinese. At the bottom of the coin below the waterline is the year 1936. No denomination is noted anywhere on the coin. Officially, Lobel designated this coin as a crown (1/4 of a pound) although Hong Kongs currency was a decimal currency named the dollar (no relation to the U.S. dollar). Had this coin been struck, this would have been the first dollar coin struck for Hong Kong since 1868. This is a fine coin for collectors who desire a piece for their collection of English monarchs.
