Description: 1939 Boston Massachusetts Gray Line map & tours Click images to enlarge Description For auction is a very rare map and Gray Line sightseeing packet of Boston, Massachusetts from 1939. This item, which measures appx 9x4 inches folded and which opens to appx 32x18 inches, is a glimpse into commercial Boston of 70+ years ago. One side features information on numerous tours within Boston and its suburban area sights, while the other side has a large map of Boston (which covers the area from Suffolk Downs and Foster's Wharf in the east to Finway Park in the west, from Cambridge in the north to the Back Bay Station in the south). The map has noted in red arrows hotels, theaters, restaurants and other points of interest. Surrounding the map are advertisements from such fabled institutions as the Metropolitan Theater, Childs' Restaurants, the Roof Gardens at the Westminister Hotel, and Du Barry French restaurant. Tours are offered to Lexington & Concord ($3.00), Ancient and Modern Boston ($1.50), Educational & Picturesque Boston ($1.50) and other locations. Adjacent the tour information are advertisements from such institutions as the Union Oyster House, Hotel Paramount & Paramount Grill, and Mario's Aristocratic Italian Restaurant. As a sign of the times, one could get a room with bath at the Bradford Hotel for as low as $3.00 per night. Mario's offered complete lunch specials for $0.50. The Westminister had a $1.25 dinner with a floor show. And Hitchcock's Grill has a half-pound club steak dinner for $0.50. There may have been some type of Veterans' gathering at the time in Boston, for several of the ads feature comments welcoming Veterans. This item is in excellent condition, even considering it is over 7 decades old, and appears to have had very little if any use. It is printed on a very thick newsprint-type paper. It has no spills or smears, no writing or markings. The only flaws I can find are (a) a very small 1/4 inch inner fold tear, and (b) a jagged nick at the bottom of one panel; otherwide I find no rips or tears. These older Boston and Gray Line tour items are very scarce, and someone will treasure it in his/her collection.
