Description: This is a premium 1939 First Day Cover in a superb UNADDRESSED condition. This is an Official First Day Cover for the Feb. 18, 1939 Opening of the San Francisco Golden Gate International Exposition (Scott #852). The "First Day Cover" date was post marked/canceled at the Treasure Island Golden Gate Station Post Office. The cover has the beautiful view of the San Francisco Bay with the Oakland Bay Bridge in the foreground and the San Francisco Golden Gate in the background posted on this rare Cover. The Golden Gate International Exposition was held in order to celebrate the city’s two new bridges that crossed the San Francisco Bay. The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge was dedicated on November 12, 1936; the Golden Gate Bridge was dedicated on May 27, 1937; and on August 26, 1937, dredging for Treasure Island, the site of the Fair, was complete. The Fair ran from February 18 through October 29 in 1939, and then reopened again from May 25 through September 29 in 1940 for a second year. A few of the segments of the Fair remain today on Treasure Island.
