Description: Here's a small format, (@9" x 12"), piece of sheet music written for Wendell Willkie's Notification Ceremony in 1940 at his hometown of Elwood, Indiana. It was composed by Gust Safstrom and published by De Motte Music Company of De Motte, Indiana. These folks published a 1936 piece of jugate campaign music for republican nominees Alf Landon and Frank Knox with the same drumming pachyderm on the cover, see our eBay item 304334409669. Back before our modern national political conventions, Notification Ceremonies were the norm when party nominees were picked out by delegates and bosses at the big political meeting when the person of focus often wasn't even in attendance. Then a group of party men would travel by railroad to the nominee's hometown to present them with the paperwork and hear the candidate's acceptance speech. They did this for decades for both the president and vice-presidential nominees. It was an excuse for party men to get on the road and PARTY WILDLY, whooping it up- and the hookers really made out. Franklin Roosevelt changed things in 1932 by coming to his own convention, and it hasn't been the same since. The Willkie ceremony was one of the last of these events in our American history, so this sheet music notes the passing of these political ceremonies. And it's also an example (we're listing several) of when the back cover of a piece of music is A LOT more interesting than the front. See that great artwork and design for Willkie? Priceless! This is in nice condition but please look at our images to judge condition for yourself so you can be happy with your purchase. You're buying it "as is" because sheet music was often handled a lot more than other campaign material. The spine isn't separated and there are some light stains. Remember, it's called ephemera, folks, since it was made to be used and then discarded. So, we're just lucky to have cool things like this - in any condition - to add to our collections. We are members of APIC and sell only authentic presidential (and other collectible) material so buy with confidence. We'll be happy to combine S & H costs on multiple purchases even though eBay claims we don't. We just issue a refund for any overpayment. Shipping on this will be Priority Mail, determined by your location. This is just some of the wonderful campaign music, (and postcards), that we acquired from a dear friend and mentor's personal collection, which we'll be offering continuously in the future. 9274
