It is dated October 17, 1940 during World War II. France fell to Germany on June 22, 1940. Following the surrender, the pusillanimous “Vichy” regime was established on July 10, 1940. Germany had only partially occupied France. The remaining un-occupied areas and the colonial empire were ruled by the "Vichy" government, led by the then 84-year-old Marshal Pétain. It was supposedly still free, but was in actuality German dominated. Little remembered today, when the first United States troops to fight in the European theater during World War II hit the North African beaches in 1942 during "Operation Torch", they were fighting "Vichy" Frenchmen, not Germans or Italians. These landings brought on the German "Case Anton", the full occupation of "Vichy France" on November 11, 1942. A short series and a scarce note, France only printed this design 20 Francs from 1939 to 1942 during World War II. The Note: A wounded warrior, it has a number of serious issues. However, it is still a very scarce piece of World War II history.
