In 1874, F. B. Ragland of Haywood County was elected State Senator from Tennessee. F. B. Ragland's autobiography, written in 1891 for the benefit of his children and to whom the work is affectionately dedicated. In it, Ragland discusses his ancestry, his immediate family, his work as a farmer and businessman, his service in the Tennessee State Legislature, his memories of the Civil War (including the emancipation of enslaved peoples), and his activities in retirement. Frederick Barham Ragland was born to William and Mary (Barham) Ragland in Chatham County, North Carolina on May 28, 1813. He married Elizabeth Wainwright Springfield (1815-1884) in October 1833 and the couple had nine children: Nancy Helen, Mary F., Milton, Thomas Fletcher, Frederick, Adonis, Elizabeth, Alicia, and Ella. Ragland worked as a farmer and as a businessman before entering politics in 1861. He served as a Representative in the Tennessee State Legislature from 1861 to 1862, 1875 to 1877, and 1877 to 1881. After leaving politics, Ragland resumed his work as a merchant before retiring. He also married again, this time to Malinda C. Senseman (1821-1890). F. B. Ragland died on June 1, 1897 and is buried in Haywood County, Tennessee. Wifes Death Notice: ELIZABETH RAGLAND wife of Hon. F. B. Ragland of Brownsville, Tennessee, born Chatham Co., North Carolina, March 25, 1815; died January 7, 1884 in the residence of her son-in-law, Dr. Samuel Chester, Jackson, Tenn.; married Oct. 30, 1833; moved to Madison Co., Tenn. in 1835 and in 1848 moved to Dancyville, Tenn. area; in 1871 moved to Brownsville, Tenn. One son, Thomas F Lieutenant in Capt. Erby's company, 9th Tenn. Regiment, CSA, was killed at Chickamauga; another son died in 1871. Burial in Dancyville, Tennessee.
