A: This is a $10 note issued by Japan between 1942 and 1945 for occupied Malaysia in World War Two. With the fall of Singapore on 15 February 1942 Imperial Japan commenced its occupation of colonial British Malaya. Martial law was declared and a 1:1 exchange rate between the Japanese military scrip dollar and existing Dollars ($) was set. Similar to the RKK notes their German Axis allies carried in their invasion of Poland, Japanese troops had arrived with millions in scrip conveniently printed well in advance of the war. Known as 'Southern Development Bank' (SDB) notes, they were circulated in Malaya, North Borneo, Sarawak and Brunei. As happened in the other countries they had conquered, Japanese economic exploitation and indifference quickly led to hyperinflation. In the course of their three and a half year occupation, over $4 billion worth of scrip would be pumped out, inflating the money supply by 30 times over what it had been in 1941. The Allies contributed to the undermining the occupation economy by issuing millions more in counterfeit notes. Declared worthless after the war, Japan has steadfastly refused redemption.
