Rubber. Here's the natural rubber industry at one of its main sources: an Indonesian laborer of a Netherlands Indies rubber plantation watching latex dripping from a rubber tree into a cup. The tree gives 700 cc of rubber every three days. The cup is filled in a few hours. This picture was taken before the Japanese seized control, but with the liberation of the islands, the rubber will flow again to distant markets. If we'd adopt the idea which some are urging that each area grow and make as much as it can for itself, we'd continue to make synthetic rubber at a higher price than we can buy natural rubber from the Indies (President Roosevelt has expressed himself in favor of natural rubber) And the Indies?
