Description: Note number in brackets in auction title is just my inventory number This is a standard Bank of Nova Scotia check used in Newfoundland before confederation with Canada. Cheques had a tax of three cents if it was under $100 and five cents (Sometime later increased to six cents) if it was over $100. The stamps were supposed to be revenue stamps but apparently there was often a shortage of revenue stamps so normal postage stamps were sometimes used. After confederation in 1949 Canadian stamps were used. This cheque would have been a lot of money in pre confederation Newfoundland.
