Description: 1948 Typed Letter Signed by Martin P. Claussen to Col. Charles A. Ranlett Letter typed on National Archives, The Franklin D. Roosevelt Library letterhead, dated July 14th, 1948, to Col. Charles A. Ranlett, and signed Martin P. Claussen. Claussen was the acting director of the F.D.R. Library at the time of the letter, which concerns information about Ranlett's grandfather, well-known sea Captain Charles A. Ranlett, Jr. (1804-1878), and about two ships named "Surprise" and "Golden State." The letter also mentions "Mr. Nixon" (assuming House of Representatives Richard M. Nixon). F.D.R. had a great love of nautical history and his library contains many ship models and research data of same. A printout of Claussen's obituary is included with the document. Martin P. Claussen (1914 – 2000), was an author and historian who worked about 20 years for the Central Intelligence Agency before retiring in 1970 as assistant to the director. He was an honors graduate of the University of Illinois, where he also received a doctorate in history and international relations and was elected Phi Beta Kappa. He began his career in 1938 at the recently established U.S. National Archives in Washington. In the late 1940s he served as acting director of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library in Hyde Park, N.Y., and contributed to a Defense Department survey of World War II records. Over the years, he wrote four books: "Peace Factors in Anglo-American Relations, 1861-1865," "Maps Published by Congress, 1861-1865," "The State-War-Navy Coordinating Committee," and the 60-volume reference series "National State Papers of the United States, 1789-1817." Upon retiring from the CIA, he did grant proposal consulting work for the National Endowment for the Humanities. He also was active in local politics in Alexandria and once served as a delegate to the Virginia state convention.
