Bowman Gum’s 1950 Football set consists of 144 pieces, each 2-1/16” by 2-1/2”. The set marked Bowman’s return to the football card market after a one-year break. Each card front features clean, captionless, colorized design of a player. This popular issue is recognized as the first full-color, nationally distributed set of the post-World War II era. The 1950 Bowmans set is anchored by Doak Walker (#1), Steve Van Buren (#23), Johnny Lujack (#26), Sid Luckman (#27), Bobby Layne (#37) and Sammy Baugh (#100). Key rookie cards include Y.A. Tittle (#5), Lou Groza (#6), Glenn Davis (#16), Joe Perry (#35), Marion Motley (#43), Otto Graham (#45), Elroy Hirsch (#52) and Dante Lavelli (#78). John Christopher “Johnny” Lujack (January 4, 1925-) (QB) was the 1947 Heisman Trophy winner from the University of Notre Dame. During his three seasons with the Fighting Irish, Lujack led Notre Dame to the National Championships in 1943, 1946 and 1947 (he left school for a period to serve in World War II). The Chicago Bears took Lujack with the fourth overall pick in the 1946 NFL Draft. In his first season, the Bears utilized the versatile player primarily as a kicker where he appeared in nine games. In 1950, he was a part of one of the greatest quarterback corps ever assembled alongside Sid Luckman, George Blanda and Steve Romanik. During that 1950 season, Chicago tied for first in the National League but lost the tiebreaker to the Los Angeles Rams 24-14. He was elected to two Pro Bowl appearances and one All-Pro First Team. Lujack retired after four seasons in Chicago with 6,295 passing yards and 41 touchdowns on 404 completions in 808 attempts (50%).
