With artwork by the popular artist and illustrator, Jo Spier. Living and working in the Netherlands, Spier, began his artistic career began in 1924 when he began drawing humorous illustrations for De Telegraaf. At the outbreak of the Second World War, Spier's work became more politically driven, and saw him get in trouble after his comical depictions of Adolf Hitler. This would eventually lead to Spier and his family being detained at Theresienstadt concentration camp. Spier and his family would eventually move to America in the 1950s. In the original dutch, this particular works title translates into English as 'Home Best'. Following on from his previous works 'Oost' and 'West' ('East' and 'West') the illustrations and cartoons featured in this volume were largely draw during artists travels to Indonesia, Surmaine and the Caribbean. This work, published around the same time as his move to America, see Spier largely reflect of the Netherlands, Dutch people and their culture. As stated in the publisher's note at the front of the volume, this particular volume so some of the artists best work, and indeed in one Spier himself took great pride in. With the bookselller label of 'E. D. Couvee' to the front pastedown and five tipped in photogrpahs to the front endpaper from a previous owners. CONDITION In a full cloth binding. Externally very smart. Very small tidemark to the tail of spine. Light shelf wear to the head and tail of the spine and also to the extremities. Offsetting to the front and rear endpapers. Bookseller's label to the front pastedown. Five tipped in photographs to the front endpaper. Dustwrapper is generally smart. Chipping to the head and tail of the spine, with a large chip to the tail. Spine is rubbed, with patches of rubbing also to the joints and extremities. Two small closed tears to the rear of the wrap to the head which have been repaired by tape. Small closed tear toward the middle of the spine which has been repaired by tape. Light offsetting to the extremities of the front and rear flyleaf. Heavy offsetting internal to the wrap. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.
