John Joseph Amalfitano (January 23, 1934-) rode the New York Giants pine for two full seasons as a “bonus baby” in 1954 and 1955, then was shipped to the minors for five seasons. He returned to the big leagues with the, now, San Francisco Giants for two years (1960-1961), played one year in Houston (1962), returned to the Giants in 1963 and finished his career with the Chicago Cubs (1964-1967). Amalfitano was utilized at every position throughout the infield and occasionally in the outfield. Joey finished his 10-year playing career with 418 hits including 67 doubles batting .244 and adding 123 RBI. Following his playing days, Joe joined legendary Hall of Famer Leo Durocher’s Chicago Cubs coaching staff. He spent four seasons at the helm as the manager of the Chicago Cubs (1979, 1980-1981) compiling a record of 66-116 in 185 games.
