Extremely scarce, incomplete set of 4 German language dictionaries of the Egyptian language, compiled and published by Adolf Erman (1854-1937) and Hermann Grapow (1885-1967). The Wörterbuch der Aegyptischen Sprache, abbreviated as Wb in bibliographic references is a comprehensive work encompassing 3000 years of linguistic history. Including Old, Middle, and Late Egyptian as well as hieroglyphic inscriptions of the Classical Greco-Roman period. The Wb contains approximately 16,000 headwords in five main volumes, two secondary volumes, and five volumes of primary source references. Making it the largest and most complete printed dictionary of Ancient Egyptian in existence. The first volumes were published in 1926, and the last one in 1961. This specific set once resided in the prestigious library of language scholar Johannes Rahder (1898-1988). Rahder was a Dutch Orientalist and professor of Japanese at the University of Leiden from 1931 through 1946, and at Yale University from 1947 through 1965. He was depicted in the work of the legendary Langston Hughes' (1901-1967) 'I Wonder, I Wander'. After a brief meeting between the two figures on the Trans-Siberian Railway in 1933, Hughes recognized Rahder as being a "...famous authority on obscure Oriental languages". Rahder was a collector of dictionaries, his black-inked Yale University faculty stamps and annotations can be found throughout these books. FORN-SHELF-0548-BB-2407-eb0786
