Deadlocked at seventeen at the end of regulation, the game earned the historic distinction as the first Championship contest in NFL history to go into sudden death overtime, with Colts running back Alan Ameche dealing the fatal blow to the New York Giants with a third down one-yard run to end the game. Seventeen including coaches/admin are now in the hall of fame from the fabled contest, notably Frank Gifford, Don Maynard, Vince Lombardi, Tom Landry, Johnny Unitas, Raymond Berry and Weeb Ewbank.
