Robert Edmund Jones gave Lloyd his start in Broadway theater design with LUTE SONG in 1947. Before he was thirty he had designed the Broadway productions of TOUCH AND GO, the New York premiere of Prokoviev's THE DUENNA, and costumes for CAVALERIA RUSTICANA and PAGLIACCI at the Metropolitan Opera. His design career had a major influence on his fine art. A surreal impressionism infused his designs for theater, and likewise his figurative paintings and sculpture are infused with drama.Mr. Lloyd came to New York with a BFA from the University of Missouri, and studied painting at The National Academy of Design, The Visual Arts School at SUNY / Purchase and The Art Students' League, where he earned full membership. He exhibited at the Art Students' League in many juried shows, and at other galleries in New York and Connecticut. The New York Times praised his large multi - dimensional works for their accomplished "style and ambitious scale."He allowed only a few, less than twenty, of his paintings to be sold to private collectors. The rest he maintained in his own collection. The bulk was created between 1985, (after which he devoted full energy and time to his art), and 1998 when he died.John Robert Lloyd's films include production design for MIDNIGHT COWBOY (starring Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight, won an Oscar for Best Picture of 1969), JOHN AND MARY, THE OWL AND THE PUSSYCAT, REFLECTIONS IN A GOLDEN EYE, SEIZE THE DAY and many others. Film and stage directors with whom he collaborated include John Huston, John Schlesinger, George Abbott, Fielder Cook, Peter Yates, Don Medford and William Friedkin. Most of his film designs are in the permanent collection of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. On Broadway, Lloyd designed eight productions, including STALAG 17, MONIQUE, HOLIDAY FOR LOVERS and ALMOST CRAZY. In 1958 he both produced and designed DRINK TO ME ONLY directed by George Abbott. Please email any questions -
