Description: Note: Please study the images carefully to determine the condition of this vintage photograph, as it may not be in perfect condition. It may contain wrinkles, cracks, and possibly even tears due to its age and how it was handled before it got to us. A scanner may interpret colors and contrast differently than human eyes will, so it is possible that the actual photograph may be slightly darker or lighter in person. This vintage photograph is offered for sale as a collectible item and conveys no transfer of copyright. 1959 Press Photo "Snap III," a five-pound isotope-powered thermo-electric device Pentagon Building, Washington, D.C.: Snap III is a five-pound, isotope-powered thermo-electric conversion device developed by the Joint AEC-Air Force Aircraft Nuclear Propulsion (AMP) Office, Washington, D.C., under the direction of Major General Donald J. Keirn, United States Air Force. The device has no moving parts. It is cylindrical, approximately 5 1/2 inches high, 4 1/2 inches in diameter, and weighs five pounds. Snap III was an Air Force requirement to develop auxiliary nuclear power sources for satellite and space vehicles. Other uses may be unattended weather stations, harbor beacons and sonar buoys. The devices expected optimum capacity in about 100 watts. Snap III is powered by the isotope polonium-210. The radiation from the polonium is converted directly into electricity by means of thermo electric materials (thermocouples). Contractual and development work was initiated on this project in September 1958. The Joint AEC-Air Force Management Office awarded the contract to the Martin Company of Baltimore, who subcontracted the thermo-electric conversion device program to the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company. Snap III takes its name from the program under which it was developed--the Systems for Nuclear Auxiliary Power Program of the Aircraft Reactors Group. The covered model at left is attached to a propeller which it whirls and a tiny light bulb which it illuminates. Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches. Photo Is dated 1959.
