PSA CardFacts excerpts:Robert Cornelius Mitchell (June 6, 1935-April 5, 2020) (FL/HB/WR) Bobby Mitchell played halfback for the University of Illinois’ Fighting Illini despite being offered a professional baseball contract from the St. Louis Cardinals. As a top track and field athlete, Bobby was also considered for the 1960 Summer Olympics, but chose football instead. The Cleveland Browns selected Bobby in the seventh round of the 1958 NFL Draft. Mitchell had a 98-yard kickoff return in his rookie seasons and set the Browns’ rookie rushing average record. Mitchell shared the backfield of the Cleveland Browns with fellow Hall of Famer Jim Brown. In the four years (1958-1961) that Mitchell and Brown ran together, the two scored 85 all-purpose touchdowns, making them the most successful running back combination of the day. Bobby Mitchell was traded to the Redskins in 1962 as Washington began their integration process, the final NFL team to do so. With the Redskins in 1962, Mitchell flourished as he was returned to the wide receiver position and led the NFL in receptions, receiving yards and yards per game. In 1963, he again led the league in receiving yards and yards per game and was utilized heavily as a kick returner. Bobby was named to the 1962 NFL All-Pro First Team and was a four-time NFL Pro Bowl selection. Bobby Mitchell was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1983.
