From its founding in 1833, it operated independently until 1960 and was a very highly profitable line for many years. Like other eastern carriers, however, the Erie began a downturn after World War II, and in 1960 it merged with the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad (DLW), which served New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, to form the Erie Lackawanna (EL). The Erie Lackawanna continued to have difficulties and became a part of Conrail in 1976. Surviving lines are now operated primarily by CSX and Norfolk Southern. "Phoebe Snow" was a named passenger train originally operated by the DL&W and for a brief time by the EL. The DL&W selected this name for its premier passenger run between Hoboken, New Jersey and Buffalo, New York. The name was selected to portray the ambiance of a high-quality passenger run, operating on cleaner coal than its competitors. The brochure highlights the operation of the train and details some of the services available on board. It measures appx 6 1/2 x 4 1/4 inches closed, 8 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches opened, and is printed on medium-weight cardstock. It is in very good condition, with no rips, tears, writing, markings or folds.
