Not onlydid Bill Johnson set new records that have been recognizedby the A.M.A., but he proved that his A.M.A. records wereno “fluke” when he set additional records a few days laterwhich were approved by the F.I.M.Speeds of course were not identical, due to the constantchanging condition of the salt beds at Bonneville, weatherand wind conditions, but Bill Johnson did prove that he wenton his record-breaking spree with full confidence, excellentpreparation, and a knowledge of what was necessary to getthe job done, in cooperation with designer Joe Dudek andthe group of individuals and firms who helped make the at-tempts possible. And, in commenting, one should not overlook the excep-tional performance set up by 64-year-old H. J. Burt Munrofrom New Zealand. Burt has long been a motorcycle enthusi-ast from the “land down under” and his feat is all the moreremarkable, not only because of his age, but because of thefact that he used an Indian Scout built in the United Statesin 1920 — and to top it off it had only 37 cu. in. piston dis-placement. Munro made a one-way run to the north at179.376 mph, and he made the south bound run at over145 mph, to set up the amazing two-way average of 162.49mph. Surely this amazing feat will be recalled in the yearsto come by his 19 grandchildren who live in New Zealand. And I am sure this event will please all of the New Zealandenthusiasts, and especially my long time friend, Geoff Hock-ley who was dealer for BSA and other motorcycles for somany years in Christchurch. It’s men such as Burt Munro and Bill Johnson who, due totheir confidence, ability and hard work, keep motorcyclingan ever interesting sport. The American Motorcycle Associa-tion has approved the official recordachieved by Bill Johnson on the SaltFlats at Bonneville, Utah, August 24,of 230.269 mph (record represents atwo-way average over a measuredmile course electrically timed of232.258 mph north and 228.281 mphsouth). This was officially confirmedby the A.M.A. as a new maximumworld speed record for motorcycles.Although there are other sanctioningorganizations which govern such con-tests, no other motorcycle has everachieved a recognized record closeto the new mark achieved by BillJohnson with his Triumph Bonne-ville streamliner, which was notsupercharged. The new officially recognizedworld A.M.A. speed record for motor-cycles breaks the previous A.M.A.world record of 214.47 mph set byJess Thomas of Fort Worth, Texas,in 1958 with a Triumph Thunderbirdstreamliner. The world speed record for motor-cycles currently recognized by theFederation Internationale Motorcy-cliste is 211.04 mph, established byWilhelm Herz in 1956 on an N.S.U.over a measured kilometer. However,Bill Johnson, riding his TriumphBonneville streamliner on September5 under F.I.M. supervision, wastimed at 224.57 mph (a two-wayaverage over a measured kilometerof 227.17 mph north and 222.03 mphsouth). The Triumph Bonneville stream-liner piloted by Bill Johnson also es-tablished a new A.M.A. Class SC(streamlined, using pump gasoline, not supercharged) speed record of205.785 mph (record represents atwo-way average over a measuredmile of 212.014 mph north and119.556 mph south)....
