Eight football fields could be fitted beneath this structure - the aluminum-roofed Coliseum at Seattle's World's Fair. Covering more than three acres and rising to 110 feet (11 stories) at the center, the clear-span roof has no contact with the ground except around the perimeter. Architect Paul Thiry (FAIA) Seattle designed the unusual structure, fitting 8,700 four by eight-foot panels into a "net" of steel cables. Thiry believed it might be possible to roof a square mile area with the same design. Reynolds Metal Company, Richmond, VA designed and fabricated the aluminum panels, which provide the building with both insulation and an acoustical ceiling.
