Nguyen Dang Thuc - Currently overshadowed by a war that tortures both halves of Vietnam, a centuries-old struggle continues between Vietnam's Asian culture and "Western progress." It is a struggle that may well last centuries more, no matter how the present war turns out. But if it is resolved in the near future, much of the credit will be due Nguyen Dang Thuc. Now 60, this French-educated northerner, philosophy professor and writer looks confidently toward the future. He takes an historian's view of Vietnam's national and cultural identity, noting how it evolved from customs and folkways influenced by Buddhist, Confucian and Hindu thought. Through it all, the Vietnamese people have retained their distinct character despite periodic invasions from neighboring countries and occupation by the French. Thus believes the Vietnamese will eventually be able to reconcile their family-based rural culture with the demands of individualistic urban western technology.
