About the Book:“Mac” McKay or “Makai’’, as he is known among his Samoan friends, arrived in Apia in 1919 before he was twenty years old to take up a clerical position with the administration. He rose to senior rank amid the slow ferment of Samoan nationalism, and with his professional competence, his deep affection for the Samoan people, and his profound knowledge of Samoan language, customs, and history, he contributed perhaps more than any other European to Samoa’s smooth transition from colonial status to independence. This is a personal story of the Samoan Islands during their ‘“‘colonial” years from 1900 to 1961. It is a warm and honest record of a young nation’s, and an individual’s, search for maturity. Imbued with a profound understanding and love for the Samoan people, the book also enlivens with wry humour the story of New Zealand’s record as an honest and enlightened, if inexperienced, colonial power. As Sir Guy Powles says in his Foreword, “often the light touch reveals a telling truth’. Full of humorous stories of an unusual and romantic people, this book will also appeal to those who remember A Pattern of Islands and other exciting tales of the South Pacific. About the author:C. G. A. McKay was born in 1900. He was educated at Wellington College and joined the Government Service in 1917. In 1919, before he was twenty, he set out for Samoa to take up a junior clerk’s position. There he remained until 1943 when he reluctantly left to take up the position of Secretary of Island Territories in Wellington. ““Mac’”’ McKay retired from Government service in 1947, but the following year he was appointed New Zealand Commissioner on the South Pacific Commission — a position which enabled him to revisit his beloved Samoa on more than one occasion. His family are now all grown up, and he lives with his wife in Whangarei. But he still keeps in close touch with all his Samoan friends. Copyright © 2018-2024 TDM Inc.
