Description: 1969 NFL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME Plus: Both 1969 NFL CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES All the highlights of the 1969 NFL Championship Game at Minnesota, plus both NFL Conference Championship Games (at Minnesota and Dallas) are now together on one DVD for nostalgic viewing. In Saturday's NFL Western Conference Championship Game at old Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington, coach Bud Grant's Minnesota Vikings host coach George Allen's Los Angeles Rams. The Vikings have not given up a score in the first quarter all season, but early in the game, Ram quarterback Roman Gabriel rolls out and passes short to Bob Klein for a TD to put Los Angeles in the lead, 7-0. Surprisingly, Viking quarterback Joe Kapp comes out throwing to start the game. The Vikings move to inside the Ram five, from where a 1-yard TD run by Dave Osborn ties the score at 7-7 near the end of the first quarter. The Rams' next drive stalls at the Viking 18, but kicker Bruce Gossett's field goal makes the score 10-7 Rams. Billy Truax's diving catches sustain the Rams' next drive, and his 2-YD TD catch from Gabriel mounts the score to 17-7 Rams by halftime. In the third quarter, a long pass to Gene Washington and a penalty put the ball on the Rams' six. Osborn scores on a run from the two, and the Vikings narrow the score to 17-14. In the 4th quarter, the "Four Norsemen" stop the Rams at the Viking 27, from which Gossett kicks a 27-yd FG to up the score to 20-14 Rams. The Vikings' next drive is capped by Joe Kapp himself, as his two-yd TD run puts the Vikings in the lead for the first time, 21-20! On the Rams' next play, Gabriel is sacked in the end zone for a safety, giving the Vikings a 23-20 lead. The tough Viking defense holds the Rams for the final 8 minutes, and Minnesota wins, 23-20! The next day in Dallas is cold, wet and rainy as the Cowboys host the Cleveland Browns in the Eastern Conference Championship Game. In the first quarter, Bo Scott skirts left end for a 2-yd TD run, putting the Browns in front, 7-0. In the second quarter, Bill Nelsen's 6-yd TD pass to Milt Morin ups the score to 14-0 Browns. Later, Nelsen moves the Browns to the Dallas 22, and with 28 seconds left in the half, Don Cockroft's FG gives the Browns a 17-0 lead at intermission. Early in the second half, Bo Scott scores again on a 2-yd run to give the Browns a commanding 24-0 lead! After a nice drive, Craig Morton scores on a keeper from 2-yds out, and the Cowboys are on the scoreboard, 24-7. After a long run, Leroy Kelly scores from the one near the beginning of the final quarter, making the score 31-7. The final Cleveland scoring comes when rookie Walt Sumner intercepts a Morton to Walt Garrison pass and takes it 88 yards for a touchdown! Final score: Browns 38, Cowboys 14! THE BIG ONE! Known for their outstanding defense, the Minnesota Vikings are favorites to beat the Browns in the NFL Championship Game at Met Stadium. Closeups shots before the game show quarterbacks Joe Kapp of Minnesota and Bill Nelsen of Cleveland warming up, as well as coaches Bud Grant and Blanton Collier. Throughout the game, you'll see many of the stars on both teams in action: Nelsen, Walt Sumner, Jim Houston, Leroy Kelly, Bo Scott, Erich Barnes, Gary Collins, John Garlington, Mike Howell, Bill Andrews and Paul Warfield of the Browns, and Kapp, Bill Brown, Gene Washington, Lonnie Warwick, John Henderson, Oscar Reed, Milt Sunde, Paul Krause, Karl Kassulke and Alan Page of the Vikings. Probably the two most outstanding players of the game are the Vikings' Wally Hilgenberg on defense and Dave Osborn on offense. The first score of the game comes on a broken play, when Viking QB Kapp runs into Bill Brown. Kapp stays on his feet and rumbles the 7-yds needed for the TD to put Minnesota in front, 7-0. Later in the first quarter, defender Erich Barnes slips and falls, and Kapp hits Gene Washington for a 75-yd TD bomb to give the Vikings a 14-0 lead. Meanwhile, pressure from the "Purple People Eaters" is affecting Nelsen's timing, and the Cleveland running game is stymied. Wally Hilgenberg is leading a defense which is shutting off the Cleveland power sweep. The Viking tandem of Brown and Dave Osborn is moving the ball for Minnesota, but when a drive stalls at the Cleveland 30, Fred Cox boots a FG to up the score to 17-0. Osborn next caps a 60+yd first half with a 20-yd TD run to make the score 24-0 at intermission. The Browns change into sneakers for the second half, but a Paul Krause interception ends a nice Browns drive to open the third quarter. Later, Cox's second FG makes the score 27-0 Vikings. The Browns don't score until the final quarter, when a 3-yd TD pass from Nelsen to Gary Collins makes the final score 27-7. Narrated by Jack Whitaker.
