Sayers was a two-time All-American at the University of Kansas and rushed for 2,675 yards amassing 3,917 career all-purpose yards as a member of the Jayhawks. The Chicago Bears selected Sayers with the fourth overall pick of the 1965 NFL Draft, while the Kansas City Chiefs took his with the fifth overall pick of the 1965 AFL Draft. Considered one of the greatest open field runners in college football history, Sayers took those skills to the NFL joining the Chicago Bears in 1965. Gale’s impact on the NFL was immediate as he had 1,375 yards from scrimmage in his first season and scored an NFL rookie record 22 touchdowns. He was named the 1965 NFL Rookie of the Year recipient. He led the NFL twice in rushing yards, once in rushing attempts and yards per carry, and yards from scrimmage and three times in yards per game. He also led the NFL for three consecutive seasons (1965-1967) in all-purpose yards. Gale Sayers was named to five NFL All-Pro First Teams and was a four-time NFL Pro Bowl selection, winning the Pro Bowl MVP on three occasions (1966, 1967, 1969). Gale played his entire career with the Chicago Bears (1965-1971) until it was ct short due to nagging knee injuries. Gale Sayers finished his career with 6,263 yards from scrimmage on 4,956 rushing yards and 1,307 receiving yards and scored 336 points on 56 all-purpose touchdowns. Gale Sayers was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame in 1977.
