1970 Topps Football Poster # 17 Merlin Olsen (HOF) - Los Angeles Rams (EX)

Description: 1970 Topps Football Poster # 17 Merlin Olsen (HOF) - Los Angeles Rams (EX) 1970-1979 Football CardsWhile the 1960s were the first big step for football cards, the 1970s helped establish football cards as a legitimate option for a league with growing popularity. Topps was the king of 1970s football cards and the products include many top rookie players that are still relevant in the hobby today.A few well-known names top the list of 1970s rookie football cards. Comprised of elite Hall of Fame players, the most valuable rookies from the decade include Terry Bradshaw, Roger Staubach and Walter Payton. Many other names are hotly pursued by collectors, such as O.J. Simpson, Steve Largent, Earl Campbell, Joe Greene, Steve Spurrier, Tony Dorsett, and Lynn Swann.1970 Topps Football Trading Card SetAlthough it did not include NFL or team logos, 1970 Topps Football trading card set is filled with Hall of Fame Players. Top veteran cards include Gale Sayers, Bart Starr, Johnny Unitas, Fran Tarkenton and Dick Butkus. The rookie card for O.J. Simpson headlines this popular product. Product Details The release of the 1970 Topps Football trading card set marked the beginning of a new era for the Topps Company. Topps had made the decision to cut back on expenses by forgoing the licensing fee required by the NFL to use team logos on trading cards or to depict player images displaying team names and logos. As a result, the technique of airbrushing become widely used in Topps Football card sets throughout the decade and beyond. 1970 marked the first year of an eleven-year run of logo-less football cards. It would also be the first year of the "new" NFL with the merger of the AFL and NFL. This merger, combined with a new national TV contract, allowed professional football to take a major step forward. The checklist for the 1970 Topps Football trading card set consists of 263 total cards, each measuring the standard 2-1/2 by 3-1/2 inches. The set's major claim to fame is that it contains the rookie card of O.J. Simpson, card number 90. The set as a whole, and Simpson's RC card in particular, has decreased in value as a result of the personal affairs in Simpson's tumultuous life. Other rookie cards included in the set are those of eventual Hall of Famer's, Alan Page (#59), Elvin Bethea (#43), Jan Stenerud (#25), Lem Barney (#75) and Tom Mack (#151). Other notable rookies include future actors, Fred Dryer (#247) and Bubba Smith (#114).Loaded with veteran Hall of Fame players, the 1970 Topps Football trading card set is a "who's who" of Canton inductees, including Gale Sayers (#70), Bart Starr (#30), Johnny Unitas (#180), Fran Tarkenton (#80), Dick Butkus (#190), Ray Nitschke (#55), Len Dawson (#1), Larry Csonka (#162), and Bob Griese (#10), to name a few.DesignThe card fronts use an oval-shaped frame matting the player's picture, similar to the design used in 1958. This time, however, there is a solid-colored banner that tails off of the oval. This area contains the player's name and team. A football in the lower right gives his position. A tan/brown color surrounds the player's photo and a white border surrounds the entire card. There are two styles of card backs, depending on the player. For most, a white circle contains the card number, and a box extending across the top gives year and lifetime statistics. For linemen, there are no stats, so the card number is moved down and placed inside a purple ball. The player's name is rendered in a script format, with some vital stats to the right. The rest of the card is split into two parts. The left side features a short biographical write-up, while the right side features a cartoon about the player. A few cards have the cartoon covered so a coin's edge is needed to reveal it.Printing and DistributionThe 1970 Topps Football trading card set was printed in two series, with a checklist card #132 printed in each series. Since there were no variations with the checklist card as in the past couple years, the card is considered to be a double-printed. The first series consists of card #'s 1-132 and the second series includes #'s 133-263. Cards were distributed at retail in 10c wax packs.Insert Sets and Ancillary ProductsBoth series of 1970 Topps Football trading card set were distributed with a unique insert set. Series One contained paper posters measuring approximately 8x10 inches. Consisting of a total of 24 different players, the bigger names in the set include Sayers and Butkus. Series Two packs contained one Super Glossy card from a checklist of 33 total players. Notable among them are Unitas, Starr, Namath and Simpson. That same year, Topps also released a separate product called Topps Supers. These over-sized cards measured 3-1/8 by 5-1/4 inches. The Supers contained the same card back design and information as cards from the regular issue but feature a different image. Showcasing rounded corners and a super thick layered cardboard stock, the 35-card set were distributed in 10c wax packs with three cards in each pack. How We Grade: Gem Mint (GMT): (10.0) A flawless card. To be in Gem Mint condition, a card’s borders must have a ratio of 50/50 side to side and top to bottom. Mint (MT): (9.0-9.5) A perfect card. Well-centered with parallel borders which appear equal to the naked eye. Four sharp, square corners. No creases, edge dents, surface scratches, paper flaws, loss of luster, yellowing or fading, regardless of age. No imperfectly printed cards – out of register, badly cut or ink flawed – or card stained by contact with gum, wax or other substances can be considered truly Mint, even if new out of the pack. Generally, to be considered in Mint condition, a card’s borders must exist in a ratio of 60/40 side to side and top to bottom. Near Mint/Mint (NM/MT): (8.0-8.5) A super high-end card that appears Mint 9 at first glance, but upon closer inspection, may exhibit a very slight wax stain on reverse, slight fraying at one or two corners, or a minor printing imperfection. Centering must be app. 65/35 to 70/30 or better on the front and 90/10 or better on the reverse. Near Mint (NM): (7.0-7.5) A nearly perfect card at first glance, but upon closer inspection, may have slight surface wear, slight fraying on some corners, slightly out-of-register picture focus, a minor printing blemish or slight wax stain on reverse. Centering must be 70/30 to 75/25 or better on the front and 90/10 or better on the reverse. Excellent/Near Mint (EX/NM): (6.0-6.5) Card may have visible surface wear or a printing defect. A very light scratch. Corners may have slightly graduated fraying. Picture focus may be slightly out-of-register. Card may have minor wax stain on reverse, may have very slight nothing on edges. Centering must be 80/20 or better on the front and 90/10 or better on the reverse. Excellent (EX): (5.0-5.5) Corners are still fairly sharp with only moderate wear. Card borders may be off center as much as 85/15. No creases. May have very minor gum, wax or product stains, front or back. Surfaces may show slight loss of luster from rubbing across other cards. Dark bordered cards may have one or two small nicks. Very Good/Excellent (VG/EX): (4.0-4.5) Shows obvious handling, but still looks nice. Corners may be rounded or have minor creases. No major creases, tape marks or extraneous markings or writing. Surfaces does exhibit loss of luster, but the printing is intact. May have paper wrinkles. May show major gum, wax or other packaging stains. All four borders visible, though the ratio may be as poor as 95/5. Exhibits honest wear. Very Good (VG): (3.0-3.5) A well-worn card, but exhibits no intentional damage or abuse. May be “Mis-cut or Off-Center” with no border visible. May have major or multiple creases, however, creases are not so deep as to show the underlying paper. This card is completely readable, has not been written on, and has no tape marks or holes. Corner rounding may extend well beyond the border. Good (GD) (2.0-2.5) Shows excessive wear, along with damage or abuse. Will show all the wear characteristics of a Very Good card, along with such damage as thumb tack holes in or near margins, evidence of having been taped or pasted, perhaps small tears around the edges or creases so heavily as to break the cardboard. Backs may show minor added pen or pencil writing or be missing small bits of paper. Still basically a complete card. Poor (P): (1.0-1.5) A card that has been tortured to death. Corners or other areas may be torn off. Card may have been trimmed, show holes from a paper punch or have been used for BB gun practice. Front may have extraneous pen or pencil writing, or other defacement. Major portions of front or back design may be missing. Not a pretty sight.
