For twenty-five years her warm contralto voice has been heard onthe Voice of Prophecy worldwide broadcasts. When she sings a new song, we get boxes of mail asking that it be put on a record. Fortwenty-three of those years it has been my privilege to work with her, choosing songs, arranging them to suit her voice, and recording them inthe studio. Observing her through all this work and her public appearances, I have seen her hold high these two goals: to give her very best inevery song and presentation, and to give people, through the message of the song, a new vision of Jesus Christ. We feel very grateful for hertalent and dedication and for the strength she has brought to our work.Wayne Hooper.ABOUT THE SONGS: While at the home of Ethel Carlsson, a Swedish friend, I was charmed by a recording of the much-loved Swedish gospelsinger, Artur Erikson. One song that especially captured my imagination was uniquely titled “Migrating Birds.” As Mr. Erikson sang in Swedish,my friend painted a verbal picture of the message of the song. When Ethel saw that I really wanted to use this song, she prevailed upon aSwedish poetess, Elaine Sinclair, to translate Lydia Lithcll’s Swedish lyrics into English. What a fascinating comparison—“God’s people, like migrating birds, arc waiting to take to the air.” (God’s people who believe the Biblepromise that Christ is coming back again are waiting to be caught up “to meet the Lord in the air.”) I knew I must have this song to share withEnglish-speaking people, who, after hearing it, will hopefully be reminded by God’s winged creatures that “a heavenly summer is waiting.”Like the migrating birds, God has given so many object lessons in His great book of nature. I learn from it spiritual truths and am constantlymade aware of His marvelous love and wonderful plan for my life. Watching the lambs grazing out on the rolling hills, I am reminded that I amnot “Like a Lamb Without a Shepherd.” “I Wonder” when I look all around me and see His awesome, creative power! What a blessing it is towithdraw from the rapid pace of daily life to “A Quiet Place” and think about Him who made me and redeemed me! There is a renewal of soul, and I can come back prepared to face a new day, Filled with such love for God and man that it will be only natural to “Pass It On.”/X little seven-year-old boy named Bobby Bradley was playing happily in his backyard. His mother was busily occupied with her kitchenchores, occasionally looking out the window where she could see Bobby swinging back and forth from a rope that was tied to the limb of atree. Turning to tend to something, she casually looked out the window again. To her horror, she saw Bobby’s limp little body hanging with therope around his neck. Evidently he had experienced some freakish accident and was unconscious. She immediately ran out and freed him fromthe rope and screamed for help. Fie was still alive! Bobby was rushed to the hospital, but in a short time he died. The shocking news was announced in prayer meeting. One of those greatly saddened was Ruth Calkin, the wife of one of the ministers and aclose friend of the Bradley family. After she returned to her home, Ruth, still stunned by this tragedy, went to the piano, and with Bobby andhis parents very much on her mind, she wrote within a half hour the words and music to the song “But I Do Know.” Her husband, Rollin, sangit at Bobby’s funeral. Through the years this song has been one of the most-requested songs we have ever used on our Voice of Prophecybroadcasts. Its message has not only been a blessing to our English-speaking listeners, but it has been translated into Spanish, Portuguese, and anumber of other languages.Three songs in this album—“A Quiet Place,” “Reach Out to Jesus,” and “Like a Lamb Without a Shepherd”—are by one of America’sbest-known and most prolific composers, Ralph Carmichael. The fact that his music is used in almost every category of religious life speakseloquently of his versatility. His genius shines the brightest in writing melodics that really fit the words, and then harmonizing these melodies ina unique way that captures the listeners.Recently I met with the youth at a large camp meeting in Ohio. A talented young folk singer named Verlin Chalmers, accompanying himselfon the guitar, gave a short concert. I didn’t recognize any of the appealing numbers he sang; so I asked him where he got his material, hoping toget some of it for use in our radio ministry. To my surprise, he said, “I write my own songs.” We think his songs have originality and freshness, and have included one of them in this album—“We Sing.”The one goal of my friend, Paul Johnson, is to introduce people of all ages to Jesus Christ. This gifted twenty-five-year-old has been givengreat musical skill, and it is a pleasure for me to include one of my favorites of his songs-“Tum Your Life Over to Jesus.”Remember these exciting moments in history: MacArthur fulfilling his promise, “I shall return,” by triumphantly stepping off that landingcraft in the Philippines; Eisenhower’s troops swarming onto the Normandy Beach on D day; Armstrong and Aldrin walking on the moon for thevery first time, and then the suspenseful, breathtaking return when they splashed down and were fished out of the ocean by eager sailors; theexcitement when a great monarch or the President of the United States arrives. But how insignificant are these events when compared to the great spectacular “happening” of all the ages—the return of King Jesus! Yes,“The King Is Coming” as He promised He would do! And I can hardly wait!Del DelkerBrad Braley, Organ; Sue Shelton, Piano; Ray Casey,Orchestra Director and Orchestrations; John Paul Can*,Guitar; Jim Hooper, Bass; Victor Friedrich, Trumpet;Eleanor Wahlen, Clavinet; Bonnie Ritacca, Flute;Wayne Hooper, Clavinet, Celeste; John Ramsey,Celeste.Engineers — Eddie Pullen, John RamseyProducer — Wayne HooperPhotograph — Dunlap-Turney, Glendale, CaliforniaA Division of Pacific Press Publishing AssociationMountain View, California.
