Birmingham, Alabama - St. Vincent's comes down...the 72-year-old original St. Vincent's Hospital building in Birmingham is now falling before the bulldozer. Workers should be finished tearing down the old structure sometime in November. Decision was made to demolish the building because a new $12 million St. Vincent's Hospital has just been completed and put into use this year next door to the old building, at 2701 Ninth Court South. The original building received its first patients on Thanksgiving Day of 1900. But the Daughter so of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul came to Birmingham as early as 1898 to begin a temporary operation of St. Vincent's Hospital in a converted residence.Photo measures 9.5 x 6 inches.
