As a youngster, pretty, vivacious Beverly Stokes suffered from timidity. "Mom says she used to worry about her shy girl," the blue-eyed 17-year-old recalled. Just before entertaining ninth grade she "read somewhere that shyness is an extreme degree of self-centeredness." And her reserve turned to resolve. "I accepted the reality that if anything was going to happen to me, I'd have to make it happen," she said. "I decided to become involved." Now senior at O.
