(Womyn's) Music Festivalc Shoshana RothaizerMichigan 1977 This was handwritten by the artist. I know this because I have other photos of different subject's with a stamp and the same writing within the stamp IT DOES NOT APPEAR THAT MANY PHOTOS EXIST OF THE EARLIEST OF THE FESTIVALS. THE MICHIGAN WOMYN'S FESTIVAL: This was the second year of the festival, at which time the festival was moved to a location in Hesperia, Michigan. From what I have read, a tornado went through the area during this second annual festival. The festival was held in Hesperia from 1977-1981. In 1982 it was moved to a 650 acre plot of land owned by the organizers. There was an ecstatic quality to these first years of gatherings, punctuated by acts of social defiance: letting menstrual blood flow freely, throwing off shirts or all clothing, taking on male-identified jobs such as trench digging, tent stake sledging, stage rigging, tractor driving. Most of festival culture in the early days was the result of doing it all ourselves.Despite inclement weather—tornadoes visited the festival in its second year—producers and festival-goers alike were drawn to the spirit of the woman-centered community. The festival was for women only, that eventually aimed to be inclusive of "all women". Founded in 1976 and continuing as an annual event until 2015, the week-long Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival was one of the largest gatherings of lesbians in the world, featuring performances from women musicians and artists, hundreds of workshops, and sharing of lesbian and feminist culture. The festival helped pave the way for the mainstream success of women’s music festivals such as Lilith Fair and Ladyfest. Eventually, it all went to hell for reasons you can research. SHOSHANA ROTHAIZER: Shoshana was a freelance photographer. She was a member of the "Professional Women Photographers", where she printed a monthly compilation of all of its members accomplishments. She had small shows of her photographs in Greenwich Village. She died in 2011. If you want to see where she had other shows, you would have to search within the website mentioned below. The following is taken from the website of Professional Women Photographers. It was written by Catherine Kirkpatrick (who has her own photography website, by the way) after Rothaizer's death. "For those who don’t know, Shoshana Rothaizer compiled the accomplishments of the individual members of Professional Women Photographers into a list known as Kudos. In the early days (the 1980′s and 90′s) the entries were typed and pasted together, added to the newsletter (then on paper), Xeroxed and passed around or read out loud. As the internet entered our lives, they were published on the PWP website, I believe in html. When I joined PWP in 2004, I figured out pretty fast that if you got listed in Kudos, your name got a boost in the search engine rankings. This was before the world went blog-crazy and SEO became the coin of the realm. Shoshana took us seriously, and in doing so, respected and honored our vision. She made us take our own photographic work seriously. She made us keep track."=================================================================================If you want to find more of her shows you can go on that website and read the old "Kudos" monthly lists. brown paramount
