Description: TITLE: Solidarity with Lebanon (Published in both OSPAAAL catalogs-Art of Solidarity(1997) and The Tricontinental Solidarity Poster (2003) YEAR: 1978 ARTIST: Rolando Cordova MEDIUM: SILKSCREEN on cartuline SIZE: 42x72cm CONDITION: Good -The thick black paint is cracked in some places. This poster has to me sent flat to avoid further damage. The Organization of Solidarity with the People of Asia, Africa and Latin America (Organización de Solidaridad con los Pueblos de Asia, África y América Latina), abbreviated as OSPAAAL produced brightly colored propaganda posters promoting their internationalism and socialist causes. Usually they had their message written in Spanish, English, French, and Arabic. As opposed to being put up on walls around Cuba like other type of propaganda poster, these were instead folded up and stapled into copies of Tri-continental, so that they could be distributed internationally by mail subscription. This allowed O.S.P.A.A.A.L to send its message to the several hundred thousand subscribers around the world. Cuban political posters are among the best designed in the world and many prizes were awarded to their creators. For more information about the history of Cuban posters and his artists, visit my page at artofcuba.com. This poster was kept flat in a temperature controlled room for many years. Some flaws like small tears in the border, pinhole bug bites and water stains are very common in Cuban posters due to the humid/hot weather. Careless handling and poor storage of the posters also contributed to their condition. It is very difficult to find an original political poster from the 60's and 70's and very rare to find it unfolded and in pristine condition. In the majority of titles, the amount of printed posters were very limited and except for a selected group of collectors, most people disposed of them by dressing walls or recycling. Only a fraction of those survived until now. This is one of the very few. We take very seriously the packing of our original posters. To mail it to you, we first roll it around a large tube and covered with tissue paper to secure the ends. Then we put it inside a wider shipping tube to prevent damage to the edges and the poster never touch the walls of the tube. I WILL SEND YOU A CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY WITH EACH POSTER This original poster belongs to a collection that was started by my husband’s grandmother in 1973 and it was brought by us to the Unites States from 1998 to 2012 in small batches, due to Cuban and U.S government restrictions on importing or exporting art from the island. Each batch was processed by the Cuban government entity Registro Nacional de Bienes Culturales de la República de Cuba that dates from 1998 to 2012 under my name and my husband’s name as permits to take the posters to the United States. I have links in my webpage with pictures of many of the receipts as proof of provenance. During more than 20 years I befriended many of the artists and collectors, read every book and article I could have my hands on and acquired the knowledge to stand by the authenticity of my collection. I will send you a Certificate of Authenticity issued by my art gallery Art of Cuba and signed by me. It will include the Title of the poster,Year printed and the artist’s name with the image of the actual poster.
